About Alyssa

Hi! I’m a self-taught baker who shares thoughtfully-written recipes with cleanup ratings.

I grew up experimenting in the kitchen on occasion, but it wasn’t until the spring of 2020 that I started developing a lot of recipes. In the midst of a pandemic, I had just graduated from college, married my husband, postponed our wedding reception, moved to a new city, and found a new job… all within a couple of months.

Trying out all the new kitchen items we were gifted from our registry was a great way for me to destress! It also ignited a new passion for recipe development that matched my passion for professional writing.

A year later, we built our current home. And as soon as we got the keys to our big, beautiful kitchen, I knew I wanted to start a blog to share the recipes I had developed with the rest of the world.

That said, I really don’t like doing the dishes.

I still do them (…most days), but they are the worst part of every recipe.

That’s why each of my recipes includes a cleanup rating and photo(s) of the dirty dishes at the end. I appreciate knowing how much of a mess I’m committing to when I start on a recipe, and I’m assuming you do, too!

I also write all of my recipes with a ton of detail so that even beginners will feel confident attempting them. Not everyone has a lot of experience in the kitchen, but that shouldn’t matter if a recipe is well-written!

Product & ingredient reviews

Along with recipe testing, I also test small kitchen appliances and popular ingredients!

I researched countertop ovens for hours but still couldn’t find the kind of review I was looking for. I eventually decided on an oven, and after using it for six months, I made the kind of product review I wish I had seen before purchasing. It gained hundreds of thousands of views, and I thought, “you know, I might be onto something.”

I’ve since given my food processor and various brands of vanilla bean paste the same treatment—with the same warm reception!

I’m all about transparency in the kitchen, from dirty dishes to practical reviews.

FAQ

I get asked that all the time! My neighbors, friends, church family, and various other people happily take the better recipe tests off my hands and share them with loved ones.

I started The Floral Apron in 2021 as a hobby, but when I was laid off in 2022, I started working on it full-time. Thanks to all of your support, it really is my full-time job now!

I really love combining two traditional flavors into one bake, like chocolate gingerbread cookies. I usually do a test run to see if the flavor combo has potential, and if it does, I make a few recipes with that combo to get the most out of it!

I love the challenge of recipe development—there’s something so satisfying about the first bite of a successful recipe test. And while I love editing the last 30% of a video, I strongly dislike the first 70%.
